Hi, thanks in advance for any help regarding something that has confused me for a while. At work, I am using a Mini Mac with the audio preferences set to Audio USB Output to a Fiio E17 amp and Beyer 770 cans. I'm using iTunes to play music. In theory, the audio should be being passed directly to the DAC and amp circuitry. I understand that the volume control in iTunes would still work as it is probably reducing the level within the software, but if the audio is bypassing the Mac's soundcard, why does the volume control on the keyboard still work?

I am wondering if there is a physical gain circuit in the PC, and if so, does that reduce audio quality in any way? Some DACs allow digital volume control via the computer (technically the DAC chip itself is doing the volume control processing, and is why some DACs do not allow volume control and it's always receiving a bit-perfect signal).

Ideally you would want the digital volume at maximum to provide the DAC with a bit-perfect signal and you would adjust the analog volume with the amp. Not all DAC-amp interfaces are like this though and some DAC/amps only allow volume control through the digital volume. In this case, I'd recommend iTunes at max volume and use the Mac's keyboard volume buttons for volume adjustment.
