A printer driver is simply a list of commands that tells the printer to perform various functions at the request of the software. It works much like a translator.

For example, if the you tell the software to underline some text, it will use its own code to flag the text for underline. When you tell the software to print the text, the software looks in your selected printer driver command set for the printer command associated with its underline code and sends that command to the printer. The printer then prints the text with underlining. Since different printers use somewhat different commands, you need to select a driver that incorporates the same command set as your printer.
Your ML380 printer emulates the Epson LQ 2550 printer. This means that your ML380 printer uses the same command set as the Epson LQ 2550 printer and is therefore usable with the Epson LQ2550 printer driver. When selecting a printer within your software, any of the following drivers can be used equally well: Okidata ML 380 (or Okidata 380) Okidata ML 390 (or Okidata 390) Okidata ML 393 (or Okidata 393) Epson LQ-500 Epson LQ-2550 If you don't have any of these drivers available in your software, you can select another Epson LQ driver (e.g., LQ-850, LQ-950, or LQ-1050) which will function nearly the same as the ML380 driver. These other Epson LQ drivers use basically the same commands as your ML380, but a few of the commands may be different. If these drivers are used, those features which are controlled by different commands will not be available on your ML380. If you must select a driver that is not on these lists, be sure to check it thoroughly for print features such as boldface, underline and changes in pitch. Don't be surprised if boldfaced items are printed twice, underlines are misplaced, wide spaces are left between lines or the printer behaves chaotically (turn off the printer if the latter occurs). These are all characteristics of an incompatible driver selection. As we go to press, special ML380 drivers are being developed for use with Microsoft Word 4.0 and 5.0, as well as WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0. These drivers will permit direct selection of any of the six resident fonts, without your having to enter printer command codes or modify existing drivers.
